Cleveland resident and new business owner Patty Mihalek has found a way to combine two of the things she loves most: resale shopping, and helping persons with AIDS. Mihalek recently purchased Home Stuffers, a resale shop in Lakewood specializing in furnishings, household items, and objets d'art. March will be grand opening month, and the week of March 1 through March 8 has been set aside as "FACT week." 20 percent of the profits from that week will be donated to Facing the AIDS Challenge Together, a program of the Lakewood Division of Health which serves as a nutritional support program for persons with AIDS in the greater Cleveland area.
Mihalek said that donations of salable items will be thankfully accepted, and she hopes to coordinate efforts with other Cleveland area AIDS agencies in the future and act as a clearinghouse for donated items. "When you do something like this, I believe that it always works out," Mihalek commented. "I'm very grateful... things have been going so well."
Home Stuffers is located at 15502 Madison Ave. in Lakewood. They are open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, and Thursday from 1:00 to 7:00 pm; telephone 216-221-0040.

Atlantic Records' classical division has released a new CD, Sensual Classics, Too. It is lovely compilation including works by many musical masters; among them Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Brahms and Schubert. What makes it interesting is that the CD is being touted as "groundbreaking" and "controversial." Why? Because on its cover is a photograph of two men in a moment of intimacy. Obviously Time Warner (Atlantic Records is under their corporate umbrella) has been paying attention to all the marketing research surveys and realized that gay men (and lesbians too) have a higher than average annual income. I suppose that by throwing us this bone, they hope to pull in some of those gay disposable income dollars.

Most accountants think in terms of black & white.
Kevin Copps, the senior vice president of the new classical music marketing division of Atlantic, who happens to be gay himself, said, "We are taking a chance, as we know that several major chains will limit the number of stores in which they stock this record; we will lose business. But this is, after all, the greatest, and most enlightened, entertainment and communications company in the world." Please, Kevin, how about showing us how enlightened you are by releasing compilations by gay and lesbian performers
Among Friends Gallery in Peninsula has become the new local underwriting sponsor of In the Life, the quarterly gay and lesbian newsmagazine program broadcast on PBS stations WEAO/WNEO channels 45/49 in Akron and Youngstown.
Among Friends is a gallery shop representing nearly 80 Ohio artists and studio craftspeople. "We can't think of a better way to support our community while being visible and "out" to the community at large. We want viewers of PBS to know that we're proud to support the only regularly scheduled programming for the gay and lesbian community," said gallery owners Christopher Hixson and CJ Crawford.
"I feel fortunate that another PBS station has decided to carry In the Life," said Hixson. "Now it's up to our community to show its support by watching this programming, and by letting the station know that we appreciate it."
Channels 45/49 can be reached at 216677-4549. The next quarterly installment of In The Life will air in April or May.
Tenured history professor and noted author John D'Emilio has been chosen by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force to serve as director of the NGLTF Policy Institute, the educational arm of the organization. D'Emilio, currently a professor of history at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, will lead the transformation of the Policy Institute into a formal research arm of NGLTF for the production of policy papers for the gay, lesbian and bisexual movement.
"I'm thrilled that John has decided to become the first director of the Policy Institute, leading its transformation into a vibrant research and policy arm of NGLTF," said Melinda Paras, the organization's executive director. "John is a brilliant thinker and an experienced movement-builder who will energize this effort."
"I am committed to building the NGLTF Policy Institute into an indespensable source of reliable, useful and necessary information on gay-lesbian-bisexual public policy issues,” D'Emilio said. "We want to use the wealth of expertise in our community to build a reservoir of materials for activists in the field."
D'Emilio will begin serving in July, following the close of this academic year.
